Infrared to Ultraviolet Wavelength-Dependent Variations Within the Pulse Profile Peaks of the Crab Nebula Pulsar

چکیده
We present evidence of wavelength-dependent variations within the infrared, optical, and ultraviolet pulse profile peaks of the Crab Nebula pulsar. The leading and trailing edge half-width half-maxima of the peaks display clear differences in their wavelength dependences. In addition, phase-resolved infrared-to-ultraviolet color spectra show significant variations from the leading to trailing edges of the peaks. The color variations between the leading and trailing edges remain significant over phase differences smaller than 0.0054, corresponding to timescales of < 180μs. These results are not predicted by any current models of the pulsar emission mechanism and offer new challenges for the development of such models. We analyze the pulse shape of the Crab Nebula pulsar in the near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands, including previously unpublished ROSAT HRI observations. We show that, in addition to the previously known trend for the fluences of the Bridge and Peak 2 to increase with energy relative to the fluence of Peak 1, there is a small but statistically significant trend for b...
متن کاملObservations of the Crab Nebula and Its Pulsar in the Far-ultraviolet and in the Optical 1,2
We present far-UV observations of the Crab nebula and its pulsar made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in the nebula is seen in C IV λ1550, reaching a blueward velocity of ∼ 2500 km s. This can be interpreted as evidence for a fast outer shell surrounding the Crab nebula, and we adopt a spherically symmetric ...
متن کامل3 Chandra Phase - Resolved X - ray Spectroscopy of the Crab Pulsar
We present the first phase-resolved study of the X-ray spectral properties of the Crab Pulsar that covers all pulse phases. The superb angular resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory enables distinguishing the pulsar from the surrounding nebulosity, even at pulse minimum. Analysis of the pulse-averaged spectrum measures interstellar X-ray extinction due primarily to photoelectric absorption...

We present a time-lapse sequence of 20 near-infrared (J and K 0 band) snapshots of the central 20 ; 20 of the Crab pulsar wind nebula, taken at subarcsecond resolution with the Hokupa‘a /QUIRC adaptive optics camera on the Gemini North Telescope and sampled at intervals of 10 minutes and 24 hr. It is observed that the equatorial wisps and polar knots in the termination shock of the pulsar wind ...
متن کاملRadio Emission Signatures in the Crab Pulsar
Our high time resolution observations of individual pulses from the Crab pulsar show that both the time and frequency signatures of the interpulse are distinctly different from those of the main pulse. Main pulses can occasionally be resolved into short-lived, relatively narrow-band nanoshots. We believe these nanoshots are produced by soliton collapse in strong plasma turbulence. Interpulses a...
